About us

The “Salzwasser Union” (Saltwater Association) is a German registered association of sea kayakers, founded in 1985. It is a non-profit organisation aimed to promote sea kayaking, mainly along the German coastline.

Our interest in the history of kayaks covers the inventors of these craft, the Inuit, the fascination of the living sea and our commitment to its protection. The Salzwasser Union promotes high standards in navigational, rescue and technical paddling skills, as well as knowledge of ecology; all necessary for safe paddling and an intimate understanding of our coastal environment. The Union operates a comprehensive system of advanced training to ensure standards are maintained, and fosters contact at an international level.

The Salzwasser Union represents the interests of the sea kayakers, but remains independent of other German water sport organisations, and deals directly with the individual national park authorities concerning the right and rules of passage, and maintains good relations with the sailing fraternity and other organisations with similar interests.

The Executive committee, the leaders on the water (Fahrtenleiter), and the teachers of technical skills (Ausbilder) are all honorary. The Salzwasser Union does not aim to promote high sport achievement, but instead, offers its members long term goals in other fields. Paid up members can benefit from a wide array of courses and other training opportunities which are on offer.

The Union thrives from the commitment of its members for:

  • the further development of our community spirit
  • better nautical competence

Above all, the Union concerns itself with experience in a nautical environment along our coastline.
