Meets

The Salzwasser Union is a non-commercial organisation, which aims to provide a service to its members. As such, annual fees cover participation in trips, workshops, and training. We are happy to cooperate with other sea canoeing organisations provided they have comparable training and safety standards.

It is most important for members of the Salzwasser Union to be aware of the risks involved in sea canoeing, and accordingly to offer training to reduce these risks.
To afford the Paddler the skills needed to be safe on the water, courses on offer cover skills in paddle and rescue techniques as well meteorology, rules at sea and navigation.

The German Sea Kayak Week takes place annually, at the beginning of October, at a venue on or near the coast. The venue is chosen at the preceding Sea Kayak Week.
Apart from a variety of paddle tours that are on offer during the week, workshops on many diverse topics covering paddle strokes, technical matters, ecology and other subjects of interest to the sea kayaker form part of the programme of events. Cultural activities also take place, much depending on the venue of the event.

Traditional Sea Kayak Construction

In the 1920s and 1930s, enthusiasm in Germany to build replica sea kayaks from Inuit forms commenced. With these kayaks, many first descents of European white-water rivers were made. Later, these kayaks were adapted for kayak touring, whilst others, in a more traditional form, were used for sea kayaking. Much of the information on kayak forms are to be found on internet sites in English, and much of the literature is in English, Danish and French, so that at this point in time, it is not proposed to open this aspect of sea kayaking in Germany in the English language.
